Five styling ideas for your winter coat.
As we move into autumn and approach winter, it is worth remembering the attributes of a quality overcoat or coat, whose appearance translates into good taste, material standards, attention to finishes, impeccable exterior line.
The fabric mainly made of natural fibers (minimum 60% wool or cotton), a stylistically versatile model (can be worn over a day outfit, and over an elegant suit for the office, and over an elegant dress) and longevity (cut and color that do not depend on trends) are three of the most important criteria, pragmatic and practical, that make a cold season coat a valuable, long-term investment in your wardrobe.
Leaving aside the utilitarian benchmarks by which we check the quality of the respective clothes, in today's article I proposed to stimulate your creativity: to show you 5 stylization options for your cold weather coat .
Colorful accessories.
Accessories are the key to stylistic reinvention without buying new pieces. If your coat is black or anthracite grey, an emerald green bag, a solar yellow scarf, a pair of blue gloves or a red beret are the accents that add personality to this serious outfit.
Layers upon layers.
Under your fabric coat you can wear other pieces, not just the classic sweater! A denim jacket over a long-sleeved T-shirt, a velvet jacket over a silk blouse, a fabric jacket over a shirt, a knitted vest or a polar fleece hoodie are four such options. If you want to test a variant, you can even add an outer layer, on top of the coat: a quilted vest, in the same color as the coat.
With the hoodie visible.
Your most colorful hoodie, with or without cute graphics or designs on the chest, doesn't just have to be kept for cool summer evenings. Wear it with jeans, leather or corduroy pants, and don't forget to leave the hood visible: it's a very interesting styling effect, plus it adds a splash of color.
On 4 needles: on the heels and on the suit.
The cold season does not only mean boots, thick sweaters, comfortable clothes. Inspired by men's fashion, the 2- and 3-piece suit (jacket and straight trousers, with/without vest) has re-entered the ladies' style portfolio for several seasons. It has become the kind of clothing ensemble that combines elegance, comfort and modernity, being able to be worn both to the office and professional events, as well as in leisure time, as a basis for travel outfits or simple successful day outfits.
This time, my recommendation is that under an elegant fabric coat you wear a classic suit, with a flared jacket and straight trousers, and elegant ankle boots, with a flat or solid heel. And if you think about what kind of suit you can match sneakers or sports shoes, the answer is: a modern model, with wider, loose pieces.
One color, from head to toe.
It is a styling option that I recommend when the coat is in any color other than black . If the coat is beige-camel , red , pink, blue, emerald green - or any other shade outside the neutral range -, look in the wardrobe for clothing pieces in shades close to that of the coat.
A pair of chocolate-colored trousers, a sweater in a shade of coffee with milk and a scarf in a brown-chestnut tone create a refined outfit, with games of textures and brightness, which highlight the elegance of the beige-camel coat .
Similarly, a burgundy pleated skirt and leggings in a close burgundy shade, complemented by tall black boots and an all-black bag, create the right backdrop for a fiery red coat .
By the way, do you know the difference between a coat and an overcoat?
Of all, the coat is the thickest of the cold season clothes. Its length always falls below the knee, it is lined, quilted (doubled with batting) and can be made of wool, cashmere with wool, fur (natural or artificial). It can have a very elegant cut with pointed or rounded lapels, it can be closed with 2 rows of buttons or hung and fastened with a cord at the waist.
The overcoat is that garment cut from a fabric of medium thickness: it is neither thick, for very cold weather (like the coat or quilted jacket), nor thin, for rainy days (like the trench coat). We choose it for most autumn days, for the spring period with cold and sunny days, and especially for the transitional periods between seasons. Often it is made of wool fabric, natural fibers (wool, cotton, viscose) mixed with artificial ones, maybe even leather. Its cut varies from long, ultra-elegant flared styles finished with 2 rows of buttons, to oversized, casual styles with large high collars, three-quarter sleeves, mid-thigh hems, inspired by the lines of a kimono, a trench coat, a long jacket, a sailor's or an army officer's coat. The overcoat is a piece influenced by trends, that's why we find it colored or with various prints (large checks, leopard print, patchwork, jacquard, floral, abstract).
To remember:
The fabric mainly made of natural fibers (minimum 60% wool or cotton), a stylistically versatile model (can be worn over a day outfit, and over an elegant suit for the office, and over an elegant dress) and longevity (cut and color that do not depend on trends) are three of the most important criteria, pragmatic and practical, that make a cold season coat a valuable, long-term investment in your wardrobe.
